Research at the Obaid Siddiqi Laboratory spanned over various subjects, most notably the study of the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. The laboratory started when Siddiqi was based in TIFR and the earliest material in the collection is from 1971. Siddiqi and his students brought the material from Bombay to Bangalore in the late 1990s, when Siddiqi shifted to his new base, the National Centre for Biological Sciences. The collection in the Archives includes correspondence around the initial transport of equipment from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) Bombay to the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) in Bangalore. The laboratory invested heavily in state of the art equipment, as seen in some of the purchase records. A related collection is AT-001 in the Archives at NCBS, which includes many of the objects from the Siddiqi lab kept in the Archives.
The laboratory had a set of rotating students, ranging from college students to PhD students to post-docs, both from within India and abroad. Student Research Notebooks, Experiments and Scientific Drawings made by Sanjay Tickoo, Deepti Trivedi, Tuhin Chakraborty, Punam Mishra, Anil Kumar Gupta, Sarit Prati Goswami, Mohammed Bin Abu Baker, and others make up the Bulk of this collection.
The Laboratory engaged in collaborative projects with Organizations such as the Defence Research Development Organization (DRDO), The World Health Organization (WHO), The Department of Bio Technology (DBT), The Wellcome Trust, and Asia Pacific Molecular Biology Network (AIMBN). The collection includes budgets, expenditures, correspondence for and of students, logistical and internal administration, records of grants from various organizations that facilitated the operations of the laboratory, detailed inclusion of research data by M.Sc., PhD and post-doc students, documents related to published and unpublished research data, catalogues and manuals, printed ephemera and reference books

One of the rarities in this series is a handbook published by National Geographic in 1986 on a smell survey. This ascertains a critical understanding for the importance of this laboratory as this was the largest smell survey conducted by National Geographic Society and the Monell Chemical Senses Centre in Philadelphia.
