He was the co-discoverer of Raman-scattering, for which his mentor, C V Raman, received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930. Krishnan was deeply interested in physics and chemistry and had conducted experimental studies on the scattering of light in liquids and the magnetic and optical properties of crystals. He was the first director of the National Physical Laboratory in Delhi, one of the earliest national laboratories created under the Council of Industrial and Scientific Research in post-independent India. He worked as a scientific administrator and advisor to the Government of India. He was a member of the Atomic Energy Commission of India and advocated for the peaceful use of atomic energy. Krishnan was also interested in Tamil literature and Vaishnavite philosophy. Krishnan died while in office in 1961.This collection contains material related to the life and work of K S Krishnan, a physicist and scientific administrator. The papers have been arranged into nine series - notes and notebooks, scientific research, administration and teaching, talks and writings, photographs, personal and ephemera, correspondence, material related to Krishnan collected by Krishnan family, material about Krishnan collected by D C V Mallik, and Tamil documents - spirituality and literature.
Includes as part of a second accession are a set of letters related to Pugwash conference under correspondence and some material related to Krishnan's birth centenary celebration under Material collected by Krishnan family.The intellectual arrangement strives to preserve the provenance and original order of the papers.
