Mostly contains letters from colleagues, peers and collaborators as well as letters from administrators at TIFR, ISRO and PRL.
Series two is related to Varma's research and scientific career. Sub-series one includes notebooks, PhD thesis and a few research books. Sub-series two contains administrative documents related to Varma's collaboration with other institutions while at PRL for exchange programmes, events etc. Sub-series three contains 35mm slides related to space sciences, plasma physics or observatories, mostly used as research reference or perhaps for lectures.
Series three includes Varma's writings and speeches in the form of notes and drafts. It also includes drafts of poems in Hindi and English.
Series four contains biographical material in the form of certificates and tributes. It also includes a few collectables and ephemeral objects.
Series five contains photographs related to Varma's scientific career, this includes images from conferences and symposium in India and abroad.</dc:description><dc:description xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">Ram Kumar Varma was born on 31 March 1935. Varma completed his BSc from Agra University in 1953 and MSc from Lucknow University in 1956. He then joined TIFR as a research assistant. As a Fullbright scholar, Varma completed in PhD from University of Californial La Jolla in 1965 under the plasma physicist Marshall Rosenbluth. Varma also worked as a research assistant at NASA Langley Research Centre before returning to TIFR in 1966. Varma joined Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) on the invitation of Sarabhai to join a new plasma physics programme. At PRL, Varma worked on various aspects of plasma instabilities, plasma turbulence with applications to fusion and space phenomena. His research was also focussed on quantum–classical relationship with respect to non-adiabatic effects in charged particle trajectories in a magnetic field. Varma also taught courses on plasma physics while at PRL and was its director between 1987-95.</dc:description><dc:rights xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">Collection is open for access unless mentioned in specific folders of the finding aid.</dc:rights><dc:rights xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">Copyright may not have been assigned to Archives, National Centre for Biological Sciences.
