Biographical / Historical

St Agnes College, Mangalore, was established in 1921 by a congregation of sisters called the Apostolic Carmel. It was founded by Mother Mary Aloysia A.C., who was a recipient of the Kaiser-i-Hind Gold Medal of the First Class in 1929, a national award by the then British Government of India, for her contribution in the field of Women's Education. St Agnes was reportedly the first women's college on the west coast of India and the second under private management, in the whole country. It has offered undergraduate education in maths since 1921, and other science degrees since the 1960s. Later, it began admitting boys as well.
 </bioghist>
