    <head>Scope and Contents</head>
<p>The conceptual origin point for the material in this collection is the main campus of The Dohnavur Fellowship (TDF) located in the foothills of the Western Ghats in southern Tamil Nadu. The material is largely paper-based, a mix of handwritten, typed and printed, ranging from the early 1900s to 1990s. It includes field diaries, field notes, sketches, log-books, books of songs, photos, slides, maps and graphs, all with information on the flora, fauna, biodiversity of this region and sustained weather observations. It is mostly in English with notes in Tamil. Many materials move back and forth between the main campus and the Naraikadu retreat.</p><p>The Collection has been arranged into the following series and sub-series:<lb/>
Series 1: Pedagogic material - environment, with sub-series, Songs - Environment.<lb/>
Series 2: Sketches - Environment, with no sub-series but folders organised by theme.<lb/>
Series 3: Dohnavur Biodiversity - notes and diaries, recorded by individual TDF family members-naturalists, Godfrey Webb-Peploe (GWP).<lb/>
Series 4: TDF family records - Dohnavur, with no sub-series but individual folders organised by item name. <lb/>
Series 5: Weather observations with sub-series on Weather graphs.<lb/></p><p>Also see AR-027 Naraikadu Collections.</p> </scopecontent>

    <head>Biographical / Historical</head>
<p>The Dohnavur Fellowship (TDF) is a non-denominational Christian charity not affiliated with any institutional Christian administrative and/or theological bodies. It was founded in 1901 by Amy Carmichael (1867-1951), an Irish woman missionary who lived and worked in India for most of her life. The charity runs a clinic, hospital, kindergarten, residential and day school, vocational training center, home for senior citizens, and a home for children and young women at their institutional campus in Dohnavur, Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu, near the foothills of the Western Ghats. The Fellowship and surrounding settlement were both named Dohnavur in honor of Count Dohna, a Prussian count who made a substantial donation to help establish Carmichael's charitable and educational endeavour.</p> </bioghist>

As processing archivists we have imposed an order on the material bringing them under the series heading of 'pedagogic material - environment' as we recognise their use as teaching-learning aids in the schools and children' s home run by TDF. Additionally we have described the sub-series as 'Songs - Environment'. Although the songs are variously described as nature songs, forest songs, rounds and other songs, TDF had not explicitly classified them as such. Currently, the sub-series on objects is excluded from this collection as our focus is paper-based material and they require physical conservation before they can be handled safely. Also see AR-027-1.</p></scopecontent><bioghist id="aspace_bbbcc303b5ef771157d00b4192b18173"><head>Biographical / Historical</head><p>It is possible that at least some songs on the environment and biodiversity were composed by various educators and caregivers ('amma' as Carmichael was known, 'sittie', 'acca' and 'annachie' as they were called) of TDF. However, orally all such songs and their conception as teaching-learning aids (though she did not label them as such; the label is our interpretation) are attributed to the founder Amy Carmichael. The specimens were processed on campus.</p></bioghist><c id="aspace_4009c030c8602f25c83faca3254722e3" level="subseries"><did><unittitle>Sub-Series 1: Songs - Environment</unittitle><unitid>AR-028-1-1</unitid><unitid type="aspace_uri">/repositories/2/archival_objects/26224</unitid></did><scopecontent id="aspace_c07c80a5c22c1caeb4d1beab3e44924c"><head>Scope and Contents</head><p>The sub-series 'Songs - Environment' is arranged in three folders, in an order created by us. This is because the material has moved around a lot and was salvaged from various locations of the campus: 1.Amma's songs with Pyarie sittie's drawings, 2.Wonder songs, Other songs and Rounds, 3."Forest Songs, Rounds and other songs". These songs were used as teaching-learning aids (though not labelled as pedagogic material by The Dohnavur Fellowship), both in the classrooms of the main campus and during their retreats to Naraikadu. Children were taught about the natural environment (sun, clouds, waterfalls, moonlight and so on) and flora and fauna of the region (antigonon, hibiscus, potter wasp, termite, red velvet puchie [insect] and so on) through these songs. Each song was set to a specific musical notation, usually taken from Christian 'choral' music. Also see AR-027-1-1 which are classroom copies while this sub-series appears to be personal copies.</p></scopecontent><bioghist id="aspace_94f182f53478a0ab47995c408641c13d"><head>Biographical / Historical</head><p>Considering the individuals listed in this sub-series, the founder of The Dohnavur Fellowship (TDF) Amy Carmichael was referred to as 'Amma'. Pyarie sittie's given name and years can be inquired with the Donor. TDF maintains a handwritten list of its members. Non-Indian sisters were called 'sittie' and Indian sisters were called 'acca'. While the exact year for Pyarie sittie is currently unknown, by correlating with other material we can attribute her to Carmichael's time at TDF. The CEO notes that Naveena C was a gifted vocalist and music composer. David Rajamanian was a Secretary of TDF. Since inception TDF's staff, volunteers, teachers, caregivers, administrators, students, children (henceforth TDF family as they are referred by the institution) has maintained log books in each of these houses.</p></bioghist><c id="aspace_dd93f516e473d3e1bf82a05a11c5826d" level="file"><did><unittitle>Printed pamphlet on Vanacharbu (Woodland)</unittitle><unitid>AR-028-0015</unitid><unitid type="aspace_uri">/repositories/2/archival_objects/26244</unitid><physdesc altrender="whole"><extent altrender="materialtype spaceoccupied">84 Sheets</extent><physfacet>Bound Volumes: General Collections</physfacet><dimensions>14.0 x 22.0 cm</dimensions></physdesc><unitdate datechar="creation" normal="1989/1989">1989</unitdate><container id="aspace_66ca67c32beb0d53f87f28fe2d31d59c" label="Mixed Materials" type="box">25-26CRS</container><container id="aspace_b2e6e88a44bd3a8350dff15d3b5662f7" parent="aspace_66ca67c32beb0d53f87f28fe2d31d59c" type="folder">1</container><dao xlink:actuate="onRequest" xlink:href="https://collections.archives.ncbs.res.in/handle/42412/10401" xlink:role="" xlink:show="new" xlink:title="Printed pamphlet on Vanacharbu (Woodland)" xlink:type="simple"><daodesc><p>Printed pamphlet on Vanacharbu (Woodland)</p></daodesc></dao></did><scopecontent id="aspace_d3b31e70220f8af2c2ffcf2931f8fa32"><head>Scope and Contents</head><p>The material is a printed pamphlet on the boys section of The Dohnavur Fellowship main campus titled 'Vanacharbu (woodland)'. An in-house publication, it was written in 1989 by Devapiriam D A and edited by Dr. D.A. Thejus. It is included due to its archival value to the collection as it summarises the establishment and growth of the Fellowship including the founder's ideology. The writer was a life-long member of the The Dohnavur Fellowship family and is still remembered for organising annual marathons from the main campus to Naraikadu. He was the school headmaster and much like Godfrey Webb-Peploe earlier was in charge of the boys section for some years.</p></scopecontent><accessrestrict id="aspace_7b686acfa32ec647ac4e61f25c97b283"><head>Conditions Governing Access</head><p>Access Level 1: Online. However the material also contains observations at Naraikadu, their spiritual retreat located in the mid ranges of the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot in southern Tamil Nadu. The material is largely paper-based, handwritten, dating from the 1940s onwards. It includes field diaries and notes of their daily weather observations including cloud type, rainfall and temperature. It is a mix of English and Tamil.</p></scopecontent><c id="aspace_625a9f08cc564b232b16d9a5f98bc8f9" level="subseries"><did><unittitle>Sub-Series 1: Weather graphs</unittitle><unitid>AR-028-5-1</unitid><unitid type="aspace_uri">/repositories/2/archival_objects/26246</unitid><unitdate datechar="creation" type="bulk">1984 to 1991</unitdate></did><scopecontent id="aspace_5a0ddb55c48958f0e6ea29685f453bac"><head>Scope and Contents</head><p>Loose-leaf weather graphs plotting daily records of rainfall, lightning, thunder and temperature at both Naraikadu and main campus of TDF for that year.</p></scopecontent><c id="aspace_83a993e75a58fdb3be36524fde6221a6" level="file"><did><unittitle>Weather graphs - 1984</unittitle><unitid>AR-028-0016</unitid><unitid type="aspace_uri">/repositories/2/archival_objects/26247</unitid><physdesc altrender="whole"><extent altrender="materialtype spaceoccupied">12 Sheets</extent><physfacet>Documents (Unbound): General Collections</physfacet><dimensions>12 nos 39.0 x 33.0</dimensions></physdesc><unitdate datechar="creation" normal="1984/1984">1984</unitdate><container id="aspace_16606c493670975d193e1ad0362c2249" label="Mixed Materials" type="box">25-26CRS</container><container id="aspace_b0a495b74bd10e314c245ea65ce4c27c" parent="aspace_16606c493670975d193e1ad0362c2249" type="folder">1</container><dao xlink:actuate="onRequest" xlink:href="https://collections.archives.ncbs.res.in/handle/42412/10402" xlink:role="" xlink:show="new" xlink:title="Weather graphs - 1984" xlink:type="simple"><daodesc><p>Weather graphs - 1984</p></daodesc></dao></did><scopecontent id="aspace_bcc6d516384f5ce15b36c0f5ddfb2eb5"><head>Scope and Contents</head><p>12 nos. loose-leaf material.
