Thyamagondlu Shankarasastry Gopalakrishna Sastry was born on 8th July, 1923. He completed his BSc in 1945 from the then University of Mysore in Bangalore, after which he obtained a diploma in Radio Technology in 1947. His first stint at the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) was as a Technical Assistant in 1948, servicing and constructing radio equipment used in cosmic ray research. Following this, he completed his MSc in Electronics in 1953 from Gujarat University and continued working at the Physical Research Laboratory as a Junior Research Assistant from 1954-1958. While in charge of the Kodaikanal outstation of the PRL, he worked to set up a cosmic ray laboratory with meson telescopes. The analysis of cosmic ray data during this time contributed to Sastry's PhD thesis at the Physical Research Laboratory, on cosmic ray investigations at low latitudes, under the supervision of Vikram Sarabhai. Sastry then spent two years at the University of California, Berkeley, working with K.A. Anderson and his group, on instrumentation for the Solar Cosmic Ray Experimental package for EGO Satellite.
As a Research Associate in Physics at the University of New Hampshire, he worked in collaboration with NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center on a project involving the construction, testing, and launching of proton-precession magnetometer payloads, used to study the equatorial electrojet.
Upon returning to India in 1964, he became a faculty member at the Physical Research Laboratory, and worked as a Project Scientist at the Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR). He worked on the design, construction and launch of magnetometer payloads, carried on sounding rockets, with the aim of analysing data from the equatorial electrojet at Thumba, Trivandrum. During his time at INCOSPAR, he also worked on the programme to launch Langmuir probes in collaboration with NASA.
Sastry represented PRL and INCOSPAR at many international meetings and symposia, including the COSPAR symposia in London in 1967, and in Prague in 1969. He was a member of the delegation to the Commonwealth Consultative Space Research Committee meeting, held at Colombo, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), in 1968. In addition to his work in the United States, he also initiated experiments in collaboration with scientists in France and the United Kingdom. His first academic paper was published in 1955, and his last in 1980, with a total of 27 papers to his credit. T.S.G. Sastry died on October 29, 2017 of natural causes. He was married to Lalitha Sastry and had five children.
This collection is valuable for understanding some of the early histories of space research in India, and organisations that would eventually serve as the foundation for the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).

The collection was given to Venkat Srinivasan at the Archives by the family of T.S.G. Sastry on November 8, 2019. It was received from Balaji Parthasarathy, Sastry's son-in-law. The material was reorganised by Sastry's family at Sastry's residence before handing over to archives. Processing of the material began in early 2020, but was halted due to the pandemic and logistical issues. The first phase of processing was complete by July 2, 2021. In January 2022, the Archives received a request to remove material from the Sastry family. Following the removal of 46 items, final processing was complete by January 2023. The Deed of Gift was signed on February 27, 2023.
The arrangement strives to preserve the original order of the papers. Where an original order could not be found, the Archives chose an order. Folders within sub-series are usually arranged in chronological or alphabetical order. See the Scope and Content section for further details regarding series and sub-series. Upon request of the donors, some material initially appraised was removed and returned to the family. While these were numbered during the initial processing, these items were not accessioned for processing the final collection. The unique identifiers of these objects have been left unused. As a result, some series reflect gaps in the standard numbering procedure followed by the Archives at NCBS.

This collection consists of the papers of T.S.G. Sastry, a scientist who made significant contributions to the field of space research in India. Sastry was also one of the earliest PhD students at the Physics Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad, working under Vikram Sarabhai.

The letters in 1965 are from Sastry to Blamont following a meeting in Thumba, requesting to be put in touch with the group working on the Cesium Magnetometers. Includes an additional letter from Vikram Sarabhai to Blamont furthering Sastry's request. The 1967 letter is from Praful Bhavsar expressing the need for INCOSPAR and CNES collaboration at Thumba, and mentions Sastry's upcoming magnetometer launches in 1967-68. The 1969 letter from Sastry requests Blamont to provide a reference. The final letter from Sastry references a letter written to Sartiel (attached to the letter) asking for permission to use data from FU-198 French payload experiments at Thumba.
Cahill was a significant collaborator of Sastry and correspondence has been split into two folders due to its volume. The letters in 1964 from Sastry concern permission for publication of a report to the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India and progress regarding the flying magnetometers on Centaure at Thumba. The letters in 1966 from Cahill concern request of data from Sastry regarding UNH 64-4. The three letters of 1967 between Cahill and Sastry involve discussions about Sastry's recent success with payloads and comments about the future direction of work.
The letters from 1968 between Cahill and Sastry concern Sastry's contributions to the survey conducted by the Rocket Research Committee of the Space Science Board of the National Academy of Sciences. The letters from 1969 from Sastry concern preliminary results of the three magnetometer flights in 1968 and a request for a reference from Cahill. The letters from 1970 include a letter of reference sent to S P Pandya at the Physical Research Laboratory.

The June 1967 correspondence consists of a handwritten sheet of paper with a programme for Sastry's visit to the United States. The July letter is from both Howard Galloway and his wife Dottie Galloway and mentions photos of the "Tokyo photoshoot" including photos of Sastry's Magnetometer and Circuit Board. Sastry's letter on August 1967, recalls his trip to the London COSPAR conference. The letter from February 1968 is in response to the INCOSPAR invitation for the dedication of the The International Equatorial Rocket Launching Station at Thumba which was sent to Galloway. Galloway's RSVP consists of a personal note to Sastry. This folder also contains a map of Galloway's neighbourhood in Severna Park, Maryland. The map has been kept in this sub-series to reflect the original order.

The first letter from September is from Vikram Sarabhai to Hall at Imperial College, London, introducing Sastry to him. In next letter from September, Sastry asks for guidance regarding the possibilities of flying magnetometers on Centaure due to the lack of availability of the Nike-Apache rockets. A handwritten draft of this letter is included with the typed original. The subsequent response from Hall from 21 September, explains problems of flying magnetometers on Centaure and the telemetry problem. A handwritten draft of a response to this letter is included. The 1965 letter from Hall explains advancements in the process of trying to flying a magnetometer on Centaure. In the final letter in 1967, Sastry thanks Hall for arranging a visit to his lab in the United Kingdom and mentions the possibilities of future collaborations at Thumba.

The letters from January to May are attached together, and the first letter from January is from Asoka Mendis to Sastry, where he mentions that he has taken up the matter of setting up magnetic stations in Ceylon with Kannagara and Fernando. The following is letter from Kannagara to Sastry, expressing interest in setting up magnetic laboratory in Colombo and Galle and highlighting difficulties with availability of equipment and foreign exchange. Sastry's response in April mentions the possibility of taking the proposal to ISRO. The letter in May from Kannagara expresses the bleak condition of scientific research in Sri Lanka and signals at the impossibility of proceeding with this collaboration. The final letter from Sastry acknowledges Kannagara's response.

This is a copy of a letter by Asoka Mendis and Hannes Alfven at the University of California to the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) West Germany, endorsing a cometary flyby mission by the Federal Ministry for Research and Technology. Sastry was presumably sent a copy of this letter due to prior connections with Mendis and because of the use of magnetometers in cometary research.

The 1967 letter is from Nishida at the Institute of Space and Aeronautical Science, University of Tokyo, declining a visit to India; encloses a paper on the equatorial electrojet and mentions Cahill. The first letter in 1969 from Sastry references a Equatorial Aeronomy conference in Ahmedabad and includes a request to Obayashi to undertake collaborative rocket experiments at Thumba; mentions an upcoming COSPAR conference in Prague and Cahill. Nishida's response in March 1969 informs Sastry of Obayashi's proposal for joint experiments, and references a visit to MIT and a meeting with Arnoldy, Cahill's successor at UNH. Sastry's response on March 28 notes Sarabhai's paper presentation at the Madrid Symposium and notes Dr. Suguira's revised model of the electrojet. Correspondence in November 1969 concerns Sastry's request for a reference from Nishida. The 1976 letter concerns a miscommunication, Sastry clarifies that he is not Mr.Shastri who is another scientist working in the Kodaikanal Observatory.

The letter from 28 March from Sastry mentions his plans to visit Prague for the COSPAR Conference and a following URSI Conference at Paris, he also requests for a meeting with Sartiel. The letter from May 10th from Sastry mentions lack of communication from Sartiel about meeting Sastry. The letter at the end of 1970 from Sastry asks Sartiel for confirmation regarding flight plans for payloads on the Fu-198 at Thumba; Sastry also outlines the status of planning for two Nike Apache flights and mentions payloads from Obayashi and Hiro and proton magnetometer and langmuir probes from PRL.
The first letter from Sastry outlines the difficulties in contacting Sartiel and mentions the war in Israel, this letter is sent to Sartiel's address in Israel. Sartiel's response elaborates on the conditions of the war and inability to travel to France. It also mentions Sartiel's communication with Sampath, Gupta and Satya Prakash. Lastly, it also makes mention of French collaboration with Pakistan on arms deals and the possibility of this complicating Sastry's and Sartiel's collaboration with France.
The letter in January from Sartiel in Israel, requests for results of March 1973 flight. It also proceeds to outline significant results from analysis of raw data from the FU-198 flights. The March letter from Sastry responds to this letter by first noting prior correspondence with Blamont regarding results reported by Sartiel, it also requests for clarification regarding results of October 1972 and March 1973 flights, and requests for raw data from these flights for independent analysis by Sastry. Sartiel's response in April provides clarifications of results provided by Sastry. The letter in 1977 from Sartiel clarifies results from the 20.17 flight because of opposition to interpretation from Blamont.

The letter from Seiler in July requests for reprints of papers and electric field measurements. The letter from September from Seiler notes members of his labs in Brazil working to build functioning magnetometers and enquires about the possibilities of building similar surveys in India. The handwritten letter from Seiler in 1971 gives Sastry an update about his work in Brazil and the status of the US-German Probe.

Venkanna the Superintendent of the Sri Jayachamarajendra Occupational (SJO) Institute certifies Sastry's completion of the Diploma examination in Radio Technology course. A handwritten letter dated June 30th, 1948 from B.G Desai of the SJO Institute to Vikram Sarabhai introduces and recommends Sastry for a research position and notes his training in Morse. Sarabhai's letter on June 15th to Sastry offers him the position of Technical Assistant at Physical Research Laboratory and outlines the term and and conditions of his contract. The letter on July 28th from HRS Iyengar, Secretary at PRL, outlines Sastry's starting salary. The folder also contains a number of certificates from the University of Mysore certifying Sastry's results of BSc and Diploma in Radio Technology that were attached to this letter.

Mentions that work will be in the sounding rockets department with Mr. Huchon, the Director, heading development of payload instrumentation, provides details of salary. Folder also includes a sheet with details of the application of the fellowship.
Response to J. R. U. page's previous letter, apologizes for delay in responding due to travel from Thumba, notes that Sarabhai's consent is necessary for him to accept the fellowship, and notes the need for additional time to await Sarabhai's return from the United States.
